About Wilkes

Wilkes County is located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is the perfect place to become "rooted" so that your family can grow.  Wilkes County is a place where no one is a stranger.  You may see someone wave to you on the road and think, "Do I know him/her from somewhere?" Right downtown from Kohls, Walmart, Lowes, and Belk you will find Ivy Ridge Traditions, Rebels, Cook's and Aunt B's Attic.  For those more interested in the great outdoors Wilkes County offers multiple avenues to enjoy the beauty of nature.  Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir offers opportunities for boating, kayaking and swimming as well as numerous footpaths for hiking and biking. This paved pathway intertwines itself throughout the Wilkesboro's to allow for a scenic view and lots of opportunities for family fun.

The Wilkes Family YMCA is active in the local community and offers a wide range of programs for the whole family including swim lessons, after-school care, and youth sports. The Y includes a comprehensive Wellness Center with on-duty staff, group exercise programs, and SilverSneakers® classes. Dedicated to social responsibility with efforts such as LIVESTRONG at the YMCA  and will begin Diabetes Prevention programming in 2013

Popular Festivals in Wilkes include the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival and Merlefest. The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is held in early October and is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast.
